General description:
Xigera is situated in an area which has permanent water all year round, which makes it the perfect water and land activity camp. Guests can enjoy an unparalleled variety of activities including walking safaris, mokoro trips, game drives and powerboat trips, in total privacy. Xigera provides a true Delta experience with a highlight being a mokoro ride through the tranquil Okavango waterways. At Xigera guests have a good chance of seeing the elusive sitatunga antelope and Pel's Fishing-Owl.
Facilities:
Meals and evening drinks are enjoyed in the lounge, pub and dining area overlooking a permanently flowing channel or under the stars in a traditional African boma. For the hot Okavango days, there is a small plunge pool in which to cool off. A fully stocked curio shop is located behind the bar. A footbridge in front of camp is the only way predators can cross from island to island without having to swim. A "long-jump pit" has been built into the bridge with soft sand, which the animals are forced to walk over when they cross the bridge. Every evening the sand is raked smooth and in the morning guests are able to discuss the tracks and see what animals have walked through camp. Lion, hyena and leopard regularly visit the camp. Xigera Camp has a 220v generator which runs when guests are not in camp. 220v inverter power is used for lighting and fans in each guest tent 24 hours a day. Video batteries can be charged in the lodge office.
Accommodation:
Xigera’s ten luxuriously furnished tented rooms are spread around the edge of an island. Each room is raised off the ground on a wooden deck and offers a superb view of the seasonal floodplain and waterhole. Wooden walkways wind through the forest and connect the rooms to the main living area. Each room has been designed with space and character and has a romantic feel. The en suite bathrooms have outdoor showers and the private viewing decks add to the feeling of living in a riverine forest.
Game viewing and activities:
Safari activities at Xigera feature game drives; boating; excursions in traditional mekoros and walking safaris. Birding in Xigera is excellent and guests can see the Pel's Fishing Owl, African Skimmer, Slaty Egret, Wattled Crane, Lesser Jacana and plenty of eagles, vultures, raptors and kingfishers. An abundance of game includes red lechwe, lion, spotted hyena and leopard and the highest density of the rare sitatunga antelope found in the Delta. Although Xigera is considered to be a permanent water camp, there is a large presence of lion, leopard, hyena and buffalo on the islands. These animals wade and swim between the islands in search of food. The two-night Xigera mokoro trail allows guests to explore the waterways by mokoro, before stopping on the islands at night. Camp consists of simple tents, with food cooked over the campfire. Led by an experienced guide, these trips are perfect for the more adventurous travellers. Xigera has a presence of Okavango born tribesmen as guides. Some of these guides were born near to the present location of the camp and know this area intimately. The guides are eager and proud to share their incredible knowledge and passion with guests visiting Xigera.
