General description:
Xakanaxa Camp’s prime location on the banks of the Khwai River, in the heart of the Moremi Game Reserve, ensures that it is one of the only safari camps which can provide guests with an authentic year round Okavango Delta land and water safari experience. Comprehensive year-round boating and mokoro trips as well as extensive nature drives into excellent wildlife country combined with being one of the oldest and most well-established in the reserve, makes Xakanaxa a popular choice with guests.
Facilities:
The stylish African themed central buildings extend into the Khwai River and are set on raised platforms to ensure fantastic views over the surrounding lagoons and islands. The main building, constructed of local timber, reed and thatch, comprises an elegant lounge containing a comprehensive library and dining room. An expansive sundeck, plunge pool and sala with day bed are a perfect place to relax in the heat of the day. A fire-deck set under giant Jackalberry trees welcomes guests to socialize at night around a roaring fire. The reception lounge boasts a curio shop and facilities for charging videos, cameras and batteries.
Xakanaxa Camp operates on generator power, but at night all lighting is supplied by battery powered lamps, candles and paraffin lanterns.
The kitchen is renowned for its traditional safari fare served with a Pan-African touch. Meals at Xakanaxa Camp are usually enjoyed in the dining room, but guests wishing to dine in private will also be catered for.
Accommodation:
Accommodation consists of thirteen Meru-style classic luxury safari tents set on wooden platforms with en-suite hot and cold shower, flush toilet and wash hand basin. The tents are fully equipped with fans, hairdryers, gowns, a unique water sprinkler system which aids cooling in the midday heat and a kist with a lock and key for safekeeping of valuables. The safari tents are tastefully furnished and overlook the Khwai River. Each tent has a private viewing deck, to make the most of its lagoon-side position. Comfortable loungers on the deck, provide an ideal retreat for private game viewing.
Within Xakanaxa Camp, is Pandani's - which comprises of four tents which may be reserved for exclusive use for eight guests. Pandani's has its own private elevated wood and thatched lounge area and adjoining dining room with open kitchen. Pandani's is the ideal hideaway for families, small groups of friends or executives seeking privacy.
Game viewing and activities:
To the north and west of Xakanaxa Camp are the permanent lagoons and waterways of the Okavango, and to the south and east are the dry woodlands.
Birding is quite spectacular, especially during spring and summer when the migrants breed. Huge numbers of breeding storks and herons are attracted to the world-famous heronries, which lies to the north of Xakanaxa.
Game viewing drives in open 4x4 vehicles offer guests the chance to see Elephant, Sable, Giraffe, Tsessebe, Lechwe, Wildebeest, Kudu and Impala. Predators found in the Moremi Game Reserve include Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Wild dog and Hyena. Buffalo, Hippo, Crocodile, Red Lechwe, Waterbuck and Sitatunga antelope are some of the water-adapted species to be seen at Xakanaxa. All activities are led by professional, conservation-aware guides.
As Xakanaxa Camp is in the Moremi Game Reserve, it is not possible to take part in walking safaris, off-road driving, night drives or fishing.
