General description:
Savute Elephant Camp is located along the banks of the dry Savuti Channel. This area is characterized by sweeping expanses of savannah grasses and rocky outcrops. In stark comparison to the other Orient Express properties in Botswana that celebrate the water environment of the Okavango, Savute is an arid area where water is precious. Savute Elephant Camp offers a spectacular bird’s eye view of elephant drinking from the water hole just metres away from the main building. Savuti is particularly well-known for its elephants and predators.
Facilities:
Savute Elephant Camp has a heated swimming pool that is built into the river bed. Savute also offers a "Boma" or "place of eating" where guests can enjoy a traditional alfresco dining experience, while being entertained by the members of staff. The public area consists of a tastefully furnished dining room and lounge area with open fireplace, fully stocked bar and air conditioned library with 24 hour internet access, VHS and monitor multisystem equipment, slide projector and screen. All the tents, public areas and swimming pool overlook the adjacent water hole so it is not uncommon to see a wide variety of birds and animals in this largely dry landscape. Savute Elephant Camp has continuous 220V AC power.
Accommodation:
Accommodation at Savute Elephant Camp is in twelve twin-bedded canvas tents. The large luxury tents are on raised wooden decks and are shaded by thatch roofs. They are perfectly designed to suit the hot climate and maximize views. Each tented suite has a private viewing deck with an outdoor lounge offering magnificent views over the Savuti Channel. Every suite is air-conditioned and features full en-suite bathroom facilities with an additional private outdoor shower, dressing area, a well-stocked minibar, ceiling fans and a safe for valuables. The large four-poster beds are fitted with mosquito netting.
Game viewing and activities:
Savute Elephant Camp promises outstanding game viewing without having to leave the confines of the camp itself. Watching the elephants come down to the local waterhole to drink, bathe and play at sunset is one of those iconic African moments. Savute Elephant Camp offers game viewing activities in the morning and late afternoons. These activities take place on safari viewing vehicles, designed for guests comfort and safety. There are excellent opportunities to see wildlife on the now dry Savute Marsh, which is also home to the Zebra migration during the months of February and October. In addition to the game drives, excursions can be arranged to see the historic San rock paintings or the ancient Gametrackers Baobabs. As the camp is situated in the Chobe National Park, park regulations prohibit night drives and walking. Game flights in a helicopter or fixed wing aircraft are additional and must be booked in advance.
Children Policy:
Children of 8 years and older are welcome at Savute Elephant Camp. It is, however, a camp requirement that children aged between 8 – 12 years are advised to share accommodation with an adult and take private game activities.
