General description:
San Camp overlooks the endless white salt of the extinct Makgadikagadi sea and offers a unique chance to explore the Kalahari. A stay at San Camp is a true desert experience focusing on the area's geology, archaeology and anthropology as well as species unique to the area such as aardvark, gemsbok and springbok. San Camp is the only place where guests are virtually guaranteed to see the rare brown hyena and explore the Kalahari on walks with a gang of habituated but wild meerkats.
Uncharted Africa Safari co. has taken the decision to consolidate their operations and postpone the opening of San Camp to 2010.
Facilities:
San Camp's hub is a romantic white canvas pavillion, with a fluttering valance beneath its eaves reminiscent of a medieval jousting tournament. A long table surrounded by antique bookcases filled with interesting collections of bones, pottery, stone tools and beadwork makes up the communal dining area. At the edge of the main tent is a fire pit surrounded by comfortable director’s chairs.
There is no electricity at San Camp. Paraffin lamps are used. Camera batteries can be charged in the Mess Tent.
Accommodation:
San’s classic pale khaki tents, sheltered by a cluster of desert palms, stand majestically on the edge of the salt pans of the Makgadikgadi. A maximum of twelve guests are accommodated in six large walk-in white canvas tents set on slightly elevated wooden platforms with private facilities. San Camp evokes the atmosphere and elegance of a 1940's East African safari with canvas safari tents, bucket showers, running water, flush toilets, four-poster beds, mosquito net canopies, percale sheets, and paraffin lamps.
Game viewing and activities:
Activities vary depending on the seasons. During the wet season (November to April) custom designed 4x4 vehicles are used on game drives to experience the annual Zebra and Wildebeest migration. Bird walks to observe various species such as flamingos, storks, wattled crane, ducks, terns, and their breeding and feeding sites are popular. Rainfall dependant, guests will have usage of 4WD quad bikes on the salt pans. This is an exhilarating way to explore remote archaeological sites, periodically discovering never before documented fossil beds of extinct giant zebra and hippo. The dry season accommodates extensive use of the quad bikes out on the pans. Nature drives and walks (some guided by Bushmen trackers), night drives, and visits to sites of archaeological interest are highlights.
Fully qualified Zoologists/Geologists, often working on PhD research together with a small group of Zu/’hoasi Bushmen guide guests on morning walks and game drives. Game walks with Bushman trackers to observe the desert wildlife such as Gemsbok, Meerkat and Springbok are a great way to learn how the indigenous San people survive in this seemingly inhospitable land. Night drives to view migration and unique desert wildlife (Brown Hyena, Aardvark, Aardwolf etc) are a special favorite. A visit to the historic Chapman’s Baobab - which is acknowledged to be one of the largest trees in Africa, and was the campsite of early explorers like Livingstone and Selous when they pioneered this area – is another highlight.
Children Policy:
San Camp accepts children of all ages. Children under 8 years require a private vehicle and guide.
