General description:
Nxai Pan Camp is auniquely styled camp, overlooking a waterhole, on the edge of the Nxai Pan. Newly opened in February 2009, Nxai Pan Camp is the only permanent camp within Nxai Pan National Park and is perfectly placed for guests wanting to visit this unique and beautiful area. Nxai Pan is a fossil lake-bed and therefore the landscape is largely covered by grassland, dotted with clusters of Acacia trees, with some mopane woodland in the north. During the rains, the pans become covered in grass and attract huge herds of antelope, and in turn predators.
Facilities:
The main lounge area is slightly raised off the ground and connected by wooden walkways to the rooms. The main area contains a viewing deck, lounge, dining area, library, curio shop and swimming pool.
Nxai Pan Camp is solar powered with a generator back-up.
Accommodation:
Nxai Pan Camp is situated in the tree line and features eight desert rooms with ensuite facilities (one family room and seven twin rooms). The rooms are thatched with solid insulated walls to stay cool in heat and warm in the cold, essential for the fluctuating temperatures of the Kalahari. All units have ceiling fans, outside showers and private viewing decks. The rooms and the main lounge area are all slightly raised off the ground and connected by wooden walkways. Nxai Pan Camp can accommodate a maximum of 18 guests.
Game viewing and activities:
Activities at Nxai Pan Camp are varied, and include a unique fossil pans interpretation, game drives, guided walks, evening drives, and day trips to the famous Baines’ Baobabs and Pandamatenga Cattle Trail. All activities are guided, and have an accompanying tracker.
Nxai Pan is renowned for its huge springbok population. Once the rains start, gemsbok, elephant and zebras migrate to the region. At this time zebras come in their thousands to give birth at Nxai Pan. These large herds of zebras and springbok, attract many predators such as lion, cheetah, jackal, hyena, wild dog and leopard. Extraordinarily large herds of giraffes can be seen with up to 30 in a group. Also seen are the eland, wildebeest, gemsbok, greater kudu and red hartebeest. Resident to the pans are jackal, bat-eared fox and raptors that prey on the rodents and reptiles. Once the rains have started, the bird life is excellent. The noisy black korhaan is a hallmark of Nxai Pan and small raptors such as kestrel and goshawks abound.
Nxai Pan Camp is in a national park and an ecological sensitive area and for this reason there is no driving off road or at night.
Children Policy:
Children 6 - 12 years permitted provided they are on a private vehicle. Children younger than 6 years old are permitted, provided the camp is booked as exclusive use.
