General description:
Mombo Camp is a luxurious tented camp which overlooks floodplains that teem with wildlife. The sheer numbers and variety of large mammals found in this area makes Mombo Camp the ultimate safari retreat. National Geographic, the BBC and many others have filmed here, acclaiming Mombo to have some of the best all year round game-viewing in Africa. The atmosphere, combined with personal attention, food, and guides at Mombo Camp is excellent.
Facilities:
The main areas at Mombo are raised on wooden decks under cool thatch and are built around African Ebony and Sycamore Fig trees. The building is situated to look over the widest part of the floodplain which is visited by vast numbers of game including the predators. The dining room boasts a huge eucalyptus carved table, canvas and teak directors chairs and has its own decking area where meals are served under the African skies. The lounge also overlooks the open plain in front of camp and huge leather sofas and cushions entice guests to relax and absorb the beauty of their surroundings. Polished mahogany floors lead to the bar and onto the camp's library. Hidden away from the main area is the plunge pool – a welcome respite to escape the heat of the day.
Raised walkways link the main camp and dining areas to each of the rooms. Mombo Camp has a "kgotla" or boma for outdoor dining under the stars. For honeymooners, there is a private lounge with sala and a private dining deck.
A well stocked curio store, conveniently located between Mombo Main Camp and Little Mombo, is open during siesta time.
Mombo Camp has 220v generator powered electricity.
Accommodation:
The camp has a total of twelve identical guest rooms divided into two distinct and independent camps. Mombo has nine rooms and Little Mombo has three rooms, all connected by wooden walkways. Each luxuriously furnished tented room is raised off the ground offering great views over the floodplains. The walkways are raised up to two metres off the ground which allows animals to wander under the rooms.(Resident buffalo use the cover of the walkways at night and elephants navigate under the walkways with ease)
Each tent has a solid wooden door, canvas walls and mesh windows. Huge four poster beds with mosquito nets form the focal point of the large bedroom. Polished mahogany floors lead guests through the hallway to the en-suite bathroom and out to the outside shower.
The rooms are beautifully designed with private balconies giving guests their own view of the floodplains. Beyond the balcony, a walkway winds further out over the floodplain to a private sala. The sala is an outdoor bed with amazing views of the surrounding bush and wildlife that wanders by the camp.
Game viewing and activities:
As a year-round, exclusive wildlife destination (especially for predators), Mombo has a record unequalled in Africa. Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah and all the major predators are common in the region. Activities at Mombo Camp comprise of morning and afternoon game drives in open 4x4 vehicles. These drives explore the savannah and floodplains and are exciting with prolific sightings of lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, elephant, spotted hyena, southern giraffe, blue wildebeest, Burchell's zebra and large buffalo herds. Black and white rhino have been reintroduced with outstanding success to the area. Year round birding is superb with waterfowl like African Jacana, Pygmy-Geese, massive Goliath Heron and migrant waders in summer being particularly common. The two Mombo hides allow guests to relax and view game in safety during the midday "siesta" hours. The hides produce wonderful game and bird watching opportunities and are another wonderful game viewing opportunity added to the already incredible Mombo experience. Picnics on game drives allow for all day excursions into the remote areas of the Mombo concession.
