General description:
Lebala means ‘wide open spaces’ in Setswana and the camp has spectacular views over expansive plains and wetlands that make up the Kwando-Linyanti floodplain system. The wetlands and flood plains around Lebala offer a diverse variety of wildlife with excellent sightings of elephant, hippo, lechwe, zebra, giraffe, impala, wildebeest, kudu, tsessebe, roan, sable, buffalo and the ever watchful predators; wild dog, lion, cheetah and hyena.
Facilities:
Lebala is reached by a small footbridge over a seasonal waterway, which opens into a large lounge and bar area very comfortably furnished with chairs and sofas.
Lebala's bar is well stocked with soft drinks, beers and spirits, and a good selection of wines. The curio shop offers a variety of locally-made items, as well as clothing and topical books.
A fire pit surrounded by directors' chairs is where morning tea and coffee are taken before the activities start. Overlooking the plains to the front of camp is the plunge pool and several sun loungers, a perfect place to cool off in the heat of the day.
Situated at the back of camp is the raised viewing deck. Tall and shady, with views over the wetlands, guests can sit and watch the game as well as a great variety of birds.
Excellent food is served in the thatched, open-sided dining room and guests can take coffee or a nightcap around the camp fire.
Lebala Camp has generator power.
Accommodation:
At Kwando Lebala there are eight spacious, luxurious tents set on raised teak sundecks. The views from the large windows and private decks are breathtaking. Each tent features an entrance foyer, large bedroom and living area. The ensuite bathrooms at Lebala Camp have Victorian style clawfoot bathtubs, dual washbasins and flush toilets and lead out to reed-enclosed, open-air showers.
Game viewing and activities:
Lebala's activities focus on day and night game drives. Lebala Camp offers off road and night game drives - night drives being a specialty at Lebala with its high-visibility plains. After dark, spotlights are switched on and the game drives offer nocturnal sightings of rare and elusive species such as leopard, Selous mongoose, small spotted genet and aardwolf. Nocturnal bird species that are encountered include Natal and pennant-winged nightjars and a large variety of owls. An able tracker, as well as a driver/guide, accompanies all of the 4WD game drives - affording an extra pair of experienced eyes searching for game.
Depending on the season, Lebala Camp may also offer short walks. This is totally at the guides' discretion, as there may be too many elephant in the area at certain times to make this a safe option.
Children Policy:
Children 8 - 12 years permitted provided they are on a private vehicle or on a family safari. Children younger than 8 years old are permitted, as above, but only during the green season (Nov - June).
Why we like it:
Lebala is a very remote and wild camp
Hide for game and bird watching
Exciting night drives to see rare sightings of nocturnal animals
Luxurious accommodations with private decks
