General description:
Lagoon Camp is situated in the remote far north of Botswana on the 2,320 square kilometer Kwando concession. Lagoon Camp lies amongst tall and ancient African Ebony and Marula trees on the banks of a permanent lagoon formed by the meandering Kwando River. Kwando is a wild reserve and attracts superb big game, especially during Botswana's dry season. Lagoon Camp is one of the best areas to see the predators including lions, leopards, cheetahs and wild dogs.
Facilities:
The main lodge at Kwando Lagoon is large and relaxed. The lounge area houses a small library which offers a selection of natural history books. A large shady deck is dotted with chairs and tables and this overlooks the water channel. Early morning breakfast is served around the fire in the boma area and this location is also popular for enjoying a few drinks after dinner. There is an open thatched restaurant, a well-stocked bar, and curio shop. Guests can cool off in the camp's plunge pool, or just relax on the sun-beds situated around the pool. Lagoon Camp has generator power.
Accommodation:
Lagoon Camp accommodates sixteen guests in eight luxury safari-style tents. Each tent looks out over the water and has private en-suite facilities, including 24 hour hot and cold running water, open-air showers, flush toilets and modern amenities. Hippo and elephants are regularly sighted from the private verandahs of the tents.
Game viewing and activities:
The river system around Lagoon Camp is a maze of ox bow lakes, fossil riverbeds, reedbeds and riverine forests. There is excellent birding in the Kwando area, as well as a wide variety of game including lion, large herds of buffalo, red lechwe, spotted hyena, and wild dog. Lagoon is famous for wild dog viewing as the dogs have denned near the camp for many years. There are also crocodile and large pods of hippo in front of the lodge. Among the great variety of antelope species found at Kwando Lagoon, the endangered Sable and Roan are often seen. Seasonally, large herds of elephant drink almost daily at the river bank in front of the camp. Playful spotted necked otters are often seen swimming in the lagoon in front of the tents. The specially designed double-decker barge navigates the shallows and ox bows of the Kwando River all year round. The strong current in the river enables the barge to float silently down the river and guests can experience the peace and quiet of this remote wilderness. On a clear day guests can observe hippo walking under the crystal clear water. Fishing is a specialty at Lagoon and guests will have an opportunity to catch Tiger Fish, Bream, Catfish and Pike. Game walks are on offer, but are at the guides' discretion due to the concentrations of elephant found at Lagoon.
Children Policy:
Children 8 - 12 years permitted provided they are on a private vehicle or on a family safari. Children younger than 8 years old are permitted, as above, but only during the green season (Nov - June).
