General description:
Jao Camp is situated in the Jao Reserve, an area of 60,000 hectares, in the Okavango Delta. Built on a densely wooded, oval shaped island, the design of Jao Camp is awesome and spectacular. Jao is the perfect destination for excellent game viewing and a uniquely sophisticated safari experience.
Facilities:
Jao's central area is split between two levels. The lower level has an intimate sitting area, a library, an excellent wine cellar and stylish boma. Wooden walkways lead to the splash pools, each different in design and both tucked away in the shade of the Okavango date palms which surround the camp.
The well stocked curio shop sells African necklaces, Okavango baskets and wood sculptures made by local carvers. The Jao wellbeing salon offers massages and facials – both Botswana and Swedish style.
The upper level consists of a high thatched deck with a large bar and sitting area on one side and a dining area on the other. A viewing deck, furnished with comfortable chairs and loungers, and with a telescope for guests to use, has superb views over the Okavango floodplains and the savannah beyond. From the upper level, a high walkway connects to the guest rooms, winding through the tall trees dotted around the camp. A gym equipped with a cross trainer, rowing machine, stationary bike, yoga mats, exercise ball and free weights is available for guests. An entertainment room is ideal for private dining, children's entertainment, watching wildlife documentaries and conducting lectures. Jao Camp has 220v generator powered electricity.
Accommodation:
Jao sleeps a maximum of eighteen guests in nine spacious, unique and beautiful rooms. Each room has a thatched roof with canvas walls and glass doors. En suite facilities include a bath, flush toilet, basins, as well as an outdoor shower. Each room has a "sala”, ideal for midday siestas and for game watching from the privacy of the room. The rooms are raised up on wooden decks underneath the tree canopy and surrounded by lush palms.
Game viewing and activities:
Jao Camp offers a wide range of safari activities – day and night game drives, walking safaris and various water activities including mokoro and motorised boat cruises. In the summer months, activities tend more towards game drives, whereas in the winter months mainly water-based activities are offered.
Fishing activities are also offered and basic rods and reels are supplied by Jao Camp.
A variety of habitats on the Jao Reserve ensures diverse and interesting game viewing. The wildlife at Jao depends largely on the water levels in the area. The lagoons are home to Hippo and Crocodile and the permanent waterways and floodplains attract large numbers of waterfowl. In the permanent waters, Sitatunga can be tracked silently by mokoro. Large numbers of red lechwe and lion dominate the reserve's big game. Buffalo, elephant, many other plains' game species and the occasional cheetah are seen in the dry months. Jao has a raised hide located about 20 minutes from camp (which can be used for sleep-outs - maximum four people at a time - and is equipped with a long-drop toilet).
