General description:
Jack’s Camp is pitched on a low grassland knoll amongst an oasis of desert palms and Kalahari acacia. Situated alongside the awe-inspiring Ntwetwe Pan, this luxury camp is quite unique. It offers great game viewing alongside the pan which is a haven of birdlife in the wet months and attracts bigger game during the dry months. Jack's Camp was originally established in the 1960's by the late Jack Bousfield, who discovered this area whilst on a trapping expedition in the Makgadikgadi Pans. He saw the beauty of this land and developed his vision of a luxury camp under the palm trees.
Facilities:
Common areas at Jack's are outstanding, with polished wood floors and comfortable furnishings. The library tent suggests a gentleman's club, with numerous curios collected from the desert, natural history books and a pool table. The tea tent is a vision of luxury, layered with Persian rugs and cushions, ideal for decadent high teas.
There is a stunning pavilion tent that houses the swimming pool. Guests can luxuriate in the pool whilst looking out over the golden grasslands of the Makgadikgadi.
There is no electricity at Jack’s Camp. Paraffin lamps are used for lighting providing a traditional camp atmosphere. Camera batteries can be charged in the Mess Tent.
Accommodation:
Accommodation consists of ten spacious and stylish canvas tents with en-suite bathrooms and indoor and outdoor showers. Refurbished in the traditional East African 1940's safari style, the accommodation is authentic and comfortable with manythoughtful details. The tents are located in a palm grove which creates an oasis of tranquility in the stark environment of the Kalahari.
Game viewing and activities:
During the wet season the landscape transforms. Flamingo and other migratory birds descend from the skies to feed in the watery grasslands. Herds of zebra and wildebeest arrive, drawn by the lush grass, and for several months, the desert is teeming with game and predators. After the rains, guests could see huge herds of Wildebeest, Zebra and Springbok - with the accompanying predators - on the open grasslands. The summer rains also leave a warm shallow layer of water that entices Waterfowl and Flamingos. Activities are conducted in open 4x4 vehicles custom designed for this terrain and accompanied by knowledgeable guides. In the dry winter months, all-purpose ATV vehicles (a four wheeler motorcycle/Quad bikes) are available, allowing guests to travel across the saltpans. Walks with a Bushman tracker and a visit to Chapman's Baobab are activities included at Jack’s Camp. During the summer months (November to April) the focus is on the thousands of zebra which have migrated from the Boteti River and Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. The pans fill with water and attract numerous species of birds from flamingos to wattled cranes and pelicans. During the dry or winter months, the migrations move westwards, but many desert-adapted creatures remain resident. Researchers have been studying a den of brown hyaena as well as a family of meerkats in the area of Jack's Camp. Both have become habituated to humans, which allows for some exceptionally close and relaxed sightings of both species.
There is an unique opportunity to combine three nights at Jack's Camp with an epic quad bike journey across the Makgadikgadi Pans with two nights spent sleeping out under the stars amongst the boulders and baobabs on remote Kubu Island.
Children Policy:
Jack’s Camp accepts children of all ages. Children under 8 years require a private vehicle and guide.
