General description:
Duba Plains is known for the titanic clashes between buffalo and lion and was the setting for ‘Relentless Enemies’, an award-winning National Geographic documentary that records the classic interaction between the two species. Duba Plains is built on an island shaded by large ebony, fig and mangosteen trees and surrounded by expansive plains which are seasonally flooded. Duba is highly recommended for guests interested in predator interaction.
Facilities:
The main area of Duba Plains Camp comprises a large split level deck overlooking a floodplain. A large lounge area with small library and bar is decorated with various traditional Okavango crafts.
Up the stairs is a tea and coffee station and a large dining table, where dinners are served. Set on a wooden deck, is the boma and campfire pit. Each night, after dinner, drinks and stories are enjoyed around the fire. A small plunge pool with sun loungers has a wonderful view of the surrounding floodplain.
Duba Plains Camp has 220v generator powered electricity.
Accommodation:
Duba Plains is a traditional tented safari camp with elegant and spacious tents reached along sandy pathways. Each of the six large tented rooms has an en suite bathroom with shower and flush toilet facilities, an outdoor shower, as well as a veranda overlooking the floodplain. Comfortable wooden director’s chairs and a small table are situated on the balcony. The tents have wooden doors and wide mosquito-netting windows let in a breeze, which makes the rooms wonderfully cool. Fans are also available in each room.
Game viewing and activities:
The activities at Duba concentrate on day and night game drives and walks. Mokoro trips are also possible in times of good floods - usually only between May and September. This pristine area is home to lion, leopard, lechwe, tsessebe, warthog, elephant and huge herds of buffalo. Thousands of buffalo take advantage of the rich grasslands found in the Duba area and they alone support the concentrations of lions and hyenas that prey on them. These huge buffalo herds are hunted almost daily by up to four different prides of lions which live in and around Duba Plains. The lion-hyena interactions are incredible as both species compete for the same prey and most kills eventually result in the presence of both these super-predators. If the lions hunt during the day, guests are usually provided with wonderful photo opportunities.
The Duba area has productive spotted hyena dens that offer great hyena pup viewing. Aardwolf sightings are one of the specialties of Duba Plains.
Birding is excellent at Duba Plains and most of the Okavango Delta's renowned birdlife is found in the area including Swamp Boubou, Hartlaub's Babbler and Swamp Nightjar. At certain times of the year, the abundance of waterbirds along the flooded areas and water pans is exceptional - a multitude of herons, egrets, lapwings and jacanas are seen.
